| Members
of the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus, the Council for Responsible
Nutrition and the Natural Product Association joined forces last month
to discuss the important role dietary supplements play in preventative
medicine and healthcare reform. State Representatives, doctors and
other medical professionals were on-hand to talk about the benefits
of using dietary supplements themselves and prescribing them along
with a healthy diet and exercise program to their patients.
Dietary supplements received a
big push from medical industry professionals as part of an important
suggestion to healthcare reform in the U.S. William Cooper, M.D.,
director of Wellstar-Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Ga., agreed
that taking dietary supplements could help improve an individuals
overall health. Dr. Cooper is not only an advocate of taking dietary
supplements, but he also practices what he preaches with his own
regimen of fish oil, fiber and a multi-vitamin.
Healthcare reform was a hot topic
in the nations last presidential election campaign and continues
to be in the hot seat for the Obama Administration. Opinions have
been flying across the airwaves on how to mend a system that has
been ignored with no resolution in sight.
Healthcare reform will happen
in this country when you and I change our habits to be healthier,
said Dr. Cooper.
His idea of healthcare reform starting
with the people who use it has been echoed across the nation. Dietary
supplements are now getting more recognition and attention from
professionals whove come from an industry that often shunned
the use of them in the past. A survey performed in 2008 by Life
supplemented.
,a Healthcare Professionals (HCP) Impact Study revealed the top
five reasons 79% of the physician prescribed dietary supplements
to their patients:
Among the attendees of the caucus event was co-chair, Rep. Jared
Polis (D-CO). Prevention is the most cost-effective initiative
to contain costs in healthcare and dietary supplements are an important
part of prevention, said Rep. Polis. A new healthcare and
dietary supplement industry alliance may be on the horizon. g
