Hollywood Vet Suzanne Somers
Promotes Alternative Medicine
Veteran television actress Suzanne Somers released her new book entitled “Knockout”, which is a look at alternative medicine used for treating and curing Cancer. Somers is an active advocate of using alternatives, which include dietary supplements because she herself has rejected the traditional chemotherapy treatment and prescriptive medicines most doctors prescribe for Cancer patients. Over the years, she’s been met with controversy and the fear that people will abandon all forms of medical treatment, which may or may not work to their benefit in the way it has worked for her.

“I am very afraid that people are going to listen to her message and follow what she says and be harmed by it,” stated to the Associated Press by Dr. Otis Brawley, the American Cancer Society chief medical officer. “We use current treatments because they’ve been proven to prolong life. They’ve gone through a logical, scientific method of evaluation. I don’t know if Suzanne Somers even knows there IS a logical, scientific method,” Brawley continued.

With the heightened dialogue over healthcare today and the controversy behind dietary supplements, both forms of treatment are being questioned by both consumers and industry professionals. Specifically in healthcare, the idea that an industry thrives off treatment and not cures leads people to start looking for alternatives for living a healthy lifestyle. In essence, a Hollywood heart-throb may be just a step towards looking at dietary supplements in a new and positive way – just what the doctor ordered.
