As part of the Transparency Initiative led by the Obama Administration, the FDA launched a consumer site called FDA Basics. The new site includes a variety of information about the FDA, in addition to its role in monitoring commodities such as drugs, food, dietary supplements, and cosmetics and color additives. The FDA has provided additional information geared towards educating the consumer on how products are regulated and the steps taken to insure that they are safe for them to consume.
This phase marks part one of a three part initiative to provide consumers a look inside the FDA’s administration and its respective responsibilities and developments set forth by its newest Commissioner, Margaret Hamburg. Supplying information that is more transparent to the consumer was the main goal appointed by the Obama Administration for a number of government agencies.
In addition to the break down of the FDA’s essential duties, the new site provides additional tools and links such as its own search engine, Q & A section and webinars filled with facts and news for the consumers’ taking. The next phase of the initiative will be a series of recommendations to the FDA Commissioner about the agency’s activities and goals applied in educating the consumer and protecting applicable confidential information.
