Late May, Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) introduced a new bill that would effect how the FDA would exercise its power and implement new and existing policies and procedures affecting the dietary supplement industry. The “Dietary Supplement Full Implementation and Enforcement Act of 2010” as it is called, will provide at least $20 million in funding to assist with executing the Dietary Health and Education Act of 1994.
According to a news release by the American Herbal Products Association (APHA) , the new “ bill requires FDA to submit to Congress an annual accountability report including information on the number of dietary supplement manufacturers inspected under FDA’s Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulation, the number of new dietary ingredient (NDI) notifications reviewed, a brief summary of all enforcement actions taken in relation to dietary supplements, and other specific data related to the agency’s regulation of dietary supplements.”
Support has been formed by the APHA and other dietary supplement industry participants. Instead of extreme control over an industry that lacked direction from the FDA and other governmental institutions, accountability is more of what this new bill will propose.
