In light of quality concerns and inconclusive testing results, DNP
International has announced its decision to distribute only Chinese
origin Chondroitin starting in January 2009. DNP was prompted to cease
distribution of US-based Chondroitin following several quality and
potency issues raised by its customers. Although it is more expensive,
Chinese Chondroitin is highly regarded on the raw material market
due to its enhanced composition and effectiveness.
U.S. Chondroitin failed the enzymatic HPLC test
regularly because it often did not test for 80% composition as labeled,
said Alice Chin, quality control chemist for DNP. Chinese
Chondroitin meets the product requirements in both the CPC and enzymatic
HPLC tests.
One of the most important nutritional supplements
available, Chondroitin contains a chain of alternating sugars, N-acetylgalactosamine
and glucuronic acid, which is obtained from bovine, porcine and
shark cartilage. It is utilized in many pharmaceuticals, dietary
supplements, cosmetics, veterinary formulas and cosmetics, particularly
in skin creams because of its water retaining properties.
