Tapping into a market that is slowly but successfully reaching the consumer, fermented ingredients is said to be the next application of naturally manufactured ingredients. Ingredients manufactured with this unique process offer a wealth of benefits to many who consume them. BCC Research published World Markets for Fermentation Ingredients reported a compound annual growth rate of 4.7 percent between 2004-2009. Last year’s market was worth an estimated $17.8 billion of products that were applied with fermentation.

Also known as the natural way of manufacturing ingredients, fermented products have been found to make foods more easily digestible and unlock nutrients found within them. Functional ingredients such as hyaluronic acid , GABA, Glucosamine Hydrochloride and green tea are just a few of the popular products on the market that are being used in finished products marketed to consumers with specific diet needs such as diabetic and vegetarian.

Popular in China and Japan, fermented ingredients are predicted to become a success in the U.S. market in years to come. Since the consumer has become more knowledgeable with ingredients in other sectors such as weight loss, sweeteners and bone health, this type of attitude will cross over with new finished products surfacing. Manufacturers with fermented ingredients now have another opportunity to penetrate the functional product market.
